To set marks on a surface so they can be read. Also to emit a line of output — the same act, one in ink and one in light.
Latin premere (to press), via Old French preinte/priente (a pressing, an impression); to print is to press a mark into a surface so it survives the pressing.
Setting a mark down so it can be read after the moment of making has passed. Ink on paper and a line of text on a screen are the same act: something pressed forward, out of the maker's hand and into the reader's.
